Adopt a Shetland Sheepdog - No Breeder Needed

The Shetland Sheepdog, or Sheltie, is a small to medium-sized herding dog. It is mistakenly called a miniature Collie due to its strong resemblance to the breed. They are generally 20 pounds or less and around a height of 16 inches. They are energetic and agile dogs that thrive in a small farm environment.
Energy, Temperament and Personality
Shelties are very trainable and playful dogs. You’ll find they respond quite well to positive reinforcement training. However, they are shy around strangers and other dogs. They should be socialized before being left alone with a child or another dog.
This breed loves to bark and “talk”. Barking can be an issue with Shelties, and is very hard to stop. For this reason, they make wonderful watchdogs. They’ll bark at anything moving and most things not moving.
Family and Children
Shelties can be good family dogs, but they should be introduced slowly to infants. Their barking can wake babies up, so they are recommended more for established families.

Adopt a Sheltie or Shetland Sheepdog - No Breeders Needed

Shelties have coats of quite a variety. You can find them in tri-color, sable and white, bi-blue, bi-black, blue-merle, and sable-merle. The breed has a double coat that requires a lot of upkeep. The top coat is rough and water-proof and the undercoat is the one that keeps them warm. They shed their coat twice a year, but brushing should happen regularly to keep the coat from matting.
Unique Health Issues
Shelties are generally healthy, but can suffer from eye issues, hip dysplasia, epilepsy, and allergies. We recommend pet insurance for this breed to keep them healthy and give you piece of mind. Conditions like hip dysplasia are not always covered by basic plans and could require an additional rider. See who we recommend to protect your dog

Breeding and Breeders
Shelties are a very popular breed in the U.S. and Canada. Due to the collapse of the housing market and the reeling economy, there are many adoptable Shetland Sheepdogs in your area. Use our custom search or the quicklinks below to find your next furry family member.
