Adopt a Great Dane - No Breeder Needed

The Great Dane, also known as Gentle Giants, could be one of the most recognizable dog breeds in the world due to its size.  Cartoon characters like Scooby Doo, Astro from the Jetsons, and Marmaduke show that Great Danes have show that this breed has been a part of the American pop culture for decades.  Don't let their size fool you because they are soft tempered, loving dogs.  However, you'll need to make sure you have the space and knowledge to adopt a breed of this size.

Size and Appearance

While you already know the intimidating size of the Great Dane (up to 43 inches at the shoulder), we're betting you don't know about all the colors that their coats can be.  With coats of Fawn, Brindle, Blue, Black, Harlequin, and Mantle, you'll rarely see two that look the same.

Energy and Exercise

Most first-time dog owners assume that exercising your puppy or new dog has no bounds.  However, in large breeds like the Great Dane, this can be an issue.  Great Dane puppies grow at such a fast rate, they can develop joint problems.  For this reason, you should not overdo exercise during their growth spurt.  They will continue to fill out after the first couple of years to reach their adult size.

Health

As with many of the larger breeds, there are a number of health issues you need to be aware of or watch out for.  Due to the uniqueness and frequency of these issues, pet insurance is a good idea for this breed.  However, make sure to read the policy options carefully to choose the level of coverage you're comfortable with.  See who we recommend here.

  • Deafness occasionally occurs in the breed, so make sure to take this in to account if your dog is not responding to training.
  • Many large breeds also run the risk of several internal issues including gastric dilatation-volvulus and bloat, and Great Danes are no different.  You may need to use an elevated feeding dish to help combat these issues.
  • Heart disease
  • Dilated cardiomyopathy

Great Dane Adoption - No Need for a BreederFeatured Great Dane Rescue

There are many Great Dane-specific rescue organizations out there, but we'd like to introduce you to a special one in California.  Gentle Giants Rescue and Adoptions is a non-profit organization that specializes in large breeds like Great Danes and Mastiffs.  Burt Ward runs this organization.  You may remember him as Robin from the original Batman television series.  He and his team do a great job and we suggest checking them out if your in the region and are looking for a large breed dog.
